North
Broward Hospital District Presents
BCAA GAME OF THE WEEK
Plantation 23 Hallandale 7
|
The lesson in football is very simple: turn the ball over six times
and you are going to lose. Hallandale High, coming off an impressive
opening day victory over Taravella High, laid an egg at South Broward
Stadium.
Hallandale Charger quarterback Aaron Allen had a difficult time,
accounting for four of the team’s turnovers – three interceptions
and one fumble. The Colonel’s game plan was simple, take the
ball out of Leon Pennington's hands. The all-county Charger fullback
was held to minus 14 yards on six carries.
The Colonel defense has played eight quarters of football and given
up only 10 points. Defense end Jeffrey Owens led the Colonel defense
in containing the Chargers' offense. Owens was credited with two
sacks and countless tackles. Owens spent the good part of the game
in the Charger game, disrupting the Chargers' vaulted running attack.
Both teams played the first half in a slumber. The first quarter
ended scoreless. The Colonels struck first with a 20-yard field goal.
The Chargers came right back on a 35-yard pass play from Allen to
Horace Parker to the Colonel 17-yard line. Three plays later, Allen
scored a touchdown on a quarterback sneak. The Charger lead of 7-3
was short lived on the next two possessions. Travorous Bess for the
Colonels scored on two touchdown runs from 31- and 4- yards out.
At half time the Colonels led 15-7.
The Colonel defense continued to put eight defenders in the box,
daring the Chargers to throw. Without a running game, the Chargers
wilted in the second half. The workhorse for the Colonels was running
back Ricardo Curry who Curry led the way with 116 yards on 18 carries.
By nights end the Colonel running attack amassed over 262 yards.
