The defining moment in Cypress Bay football history was made last year by Lightening Principal Scott Neely. Mr. Neely made the decision to play their inaugural season at the junior varsity level. The result was an undefeated junior varsity team that entered this year brimming of confidence and experience. Who says Lightening doesn’t strike twice? Four weeks into their first varsity season, the Lightening are 3-1 after a significant victory over district rival Flanagan High.

The key to the Lightening victory was a punishing and time consuming ground game. The Lightening controlled the game clock as senior Chris Decaro carried the ball a record 40 times for 191 yards. The Lightening scored first on a blocked punt that resulted in a safety. Lightening struck twice, as junior Eric Hjartnes blocked a Flanagan punt at the Falcon's 13-yard line in the fourth quarter. Four plays later, Decaro rushed into the end zone sealing the Lightening victory.

On a rainy night, the passing attacks for both teams were limited. Cypress Bay quarterback Cameron Cowart did connect with Scott Urbanek for an 18-yard score. For Cypress Bay, this win placed them on top of the 9-6A division. The Lightening are full of confidence and are now talking “District Title.” And Scott Neely is looking smarter every day.
