BCAA GAME OF THE WEEK
BCAA Girls Volleyball All-Star Game

On November 14, 2003, Cypress Bay High School hosted the 6th annual
BCAA Girls Volleyball Senior All-Star Game.
Pam Griffin from Monarch
High and Maria Elliott from Fort Lauderdale High were selected as
the coaches for the North All-Star squad. The South All-Star coaches
selected were Barry Sikorski from Cypress Bay High and Deana Newman
from Everglades high.
The All-Star Game featured the best senior volleyball
players in Broward County. The line-up included Sarah Bryant (Coconut
Creek High), a setter who finished the season with 176 service points,
144 assists, and 138 digs, Ashley Zalewski (Plantation High), an
outside hitter that had 256 kills, 125 digs and 66 blocks for the
2003 season. Beth Schoen (Hollywood Hills High), a middle blocker
who had 154 kills and 99 digs this year and Megan McGovern (St
Thomas Aquinas High), a versatile player who had 237 service points
and 151 digs for the Raiders in 2003 were also featured.
The North
team won the exciting event in 5 games: 29 – 27;
15 – 25; 25 – 13; 16 – 25; 15 – 12.
The
Most Valuable Players named were Kerry Slattery of Cardinal Gibbons
High for the North and Audrey Hippensteel of Cooper City High for
the South.
Pam Griffin, winner of two State Championships while
the coach at Stoneman Douglas High, said: "The All-Star game
is a great demonstration of the talent in Broward County. It is
a wonderful experience to get to work with such talented players.
To be selected as a member of the BCAA All-Star coaching staff
is an honor.”
Barry Sikorski of Cypress Bay High added: "This
is a great way for these seniors to finish their careers. For them
to have the opportunity to play with girls from other schools is
rewarding to witness.
"

North
Broward Hospital District Sports Medicine Program
As the exclusive provider of sports medicine for the Broward
County Athletic Association and School Board, the North Broward Hospital
District Sports Medicine team is all about keeping athletes of all
ages in the game. The Sports Medicine team consists of nationally
certified and licensed athletic trainers in 20 BCAA high schools
who provide daily treatment and assessment of injuries during all
practices and games. In addition, the community’s most skilled
orthopaedic physicians and other sports medicine physicians volunteer
for the schools as team physicians. The District Sports Medicine
team also offers pre-participation physicals for students each year.
