North Broward
Hospital District Presents
Broward County Athletic Association Game of the Week
|
Week 1 – September 3 and 4
Lockhart Stadium – Everglades Gators vs. Monarch Knights
Two experienced coaches – Knights' Jim Mathieson and
Gators' Mike Zarra bring their first-year teams into Lockhart for this
historic battle. One of these two teams will make school history by registering
its first win.
PAL Field – St. Thomas vs. Plantation
Year in and year out, St. Thomas Coach George Smith and Plantation
Coach Frank Hepler field outstanding, hard-hitting and high-caliber teams.
Last year, Plantation was the number one offensive team in Broward, amassing
357 yards per game. St. Thomas finished last year’s campaign with
the county’s second best defense, giving up only 172 yards per
game. Be prepared for an exciting game in front of a standing room only
crowd at PAL field.
Week 2 – September 12
South Broward Stadium – Plantation vs. Hallandale
Leon Pennington, Charger running back, is a 6-1, 220 pound,
battering ram. This nationally recruited senior rushed for over 1,300
yards last year shattering Hallandale’s rushing records. Hallandale
is one of the smaller schools in the BCAA – so what chance do the
3A Chargers have against the 6A Plantation Colonels? The Chargers beat
perennial state power Glades Central last year on their way to a successful
8-4 season. Could this game be a little like David vs. Goliath?
Week 3 – September 19
Blanche Ely Stadium – Deerfield Beach vs. Blanche Ely
Last year the Blanche Ely Tigers won the State 5A football
championship. This year the Tigers move up to Class 6A. Can the Tigers
repeat their title accomplishment? The Tigers return only five starters.
The Tiger running game will feature Norris Smith, who replaces Broward
County’s all time rusher Tyronne Moss. The Bucks are led by nationally
acclaimed quarterback Brent Schaeffer. Last year, Schaeffer threw for
2,446 yards and 28 TDs. Expect a wild one between these two district
rivals.
Week
4 – September 25
Flanagan Stadium – Cypress Bay vs. Flanagan
Flanagan has a new lighted stadium and is ready for this
primetime battle with district rival Cypress Bay. Cypress Bay played
a junior varsity schedule last year. The Lightning step up in class in
its first varsity season.
Week 5 – October 3
Titans Staduim - Everglades vs. Nova
Week 6 – October 10
McArthur Stadium – Hallandale vs. McArthur
This game should be a dandy. McArthur Coach Keith Franklin
is one of the top offensive minds in Broward County. McArthur returns
14 starters for this year’s campaign. Bob Woods has built an impressive
program at Hallandale High. The Chargers return 15 starters. This game
should go down to the wire.
Week 7 – October 17
Nova Stadium – Stoneman
Douglas vs. South Broward
.
Week 8 – October 24
Coral Springs Stadium – Coral Springs vs. Taravella
The battle of Coral Springs … the winner receives the
Mayors Cup. Perry Schneider has brought a winning feeling to Taravella.
Under Coach Schneider, the Taravella Trojans advanced to the playoffs
for the first time since 1995 and only the third time in school history.
Coral Springs features the fastest high school sprinter in the nation,
Walter Dix. Half time features two of the premier marching bands in Broward
County.
Week 9 – October 31
Boyd Anderson Stadium – Piper vs. Boyd Anderson
These two teams match up in a critical District 9 contest.
This game may well determine a playoff berth for one of these two teams.
Week 10 – November 7
Western High Stadium – Cooper City vs. Western High (HOG BOWL)
In 1976, Cooper City players bought a red pig and named him “BIG
RED.” BIG RED became the official mascot of the team. The Cooper
City vs. Western game is fondly called the HOG BOWL. In past years, the
Western Wildcats have had their way with the Cowboys. Maybe BIG RED will
reappear to lead the Cowboys to victory.
