SUMMER FOOD PROGRAM WORKING TO SERVE MORE CHILDREN
For some children, summertime means no school and fewer meals.  And while a government program offers food to these children for free, officials have faced challenges as they've tried to get families to take advantage of it. More than half of the children enrolled in public schools are eligible for free and reduced-price lunches, officials say, but only 6.63 percent of them have used the Summer Food Service Program. "We don't want to leave federal dollars that we're entitled to on the table," said Julie Kreafle, the program's South Florida coordinator.


BROWARD, PALM BEACH SCHOOLS STAY A-RATED

Despite tougher FCAT standards, Broward and Palm Beach County elementary and middle schools performed well on this year's school grades, with both districts earning an overall rating of A. In Broward most elementary and middle schools earned As or Bs. The district scored 10 more A schools this year than last. The number of Ds stayed the same, with 10 schools earning that rank, while the number of  F schools dropped to four this year from five last year.
