Broward Schools Press Release

BCPS High Schools Earn More 'A's
Blanche Ely High and McArthur High Jump Two Letter Grades –
From a 'C' to an 'A'

The Florida Department of Education today (January 4, 2012) released 2010/11 high school grades under the revised Florida A++ Plan. Elementary and middle school grades were released in late June 2011.

This year's results highlight that 76.3% of Broward's high schools earned a grade of 'A' or 'B' compared to 73.6% last year, including Blanche Ely High School and McArthur High School both improving to an 'A' from a 'C' last year. All but one District high school (non-charter) earned a grade C or higher.

For elementary and middle schools, the grades are based entirely on Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) results. High school scores include other components including student performance and participation in accelerated courses, college readiness in reading and mathematics, and the overall graduation rate as well as the graduation rate of "at-risk" students.

Here are some highlights from this year's high school grades:

• 14 District and three charter high schools received an 'A', up from 10 District, and down from four charter last year
• 12 District high schools received a grade of 'B', down from 14 last year
• Five District high schools and two charter high schools received a grade of 'C', down from eight District and up from 0 charter last year
• One District high school (Boyd Anderson) received a 'D'
• No District high schools and one charter high school (Parkway Academy) received an 'F' grade
• Overall, eight high schools improved one letter grade from the prior year and two improved by two letter grades (Blanche Ely and McArthur to an 'A' from a 'C')
• Overall, seven high schools dropped one letter grade from the previous year

Additional information on school grades can be accessed through the Florida Department of Education's website at (http://schoolgrades.fldoe.org/).
