School Board Approves Contract For New Superintendent
The School Board of Broward County, Florida approved Robert W. Runcie's contract today (October 4, 2011), officially making him the next Superintendent of Schools for Broward County Public Schools. The three-year agreement takes effect Wednesday, October 5, 2011 and runs through October 4, 2014.
School Board members agreed to pay Runcie slightly less than recently retired Superintendent James F. Notter – $275,000 – and other perks including health benefits, life insurance, use of a District vehicle and relocation expenses outlined in the agreement.
"We're very happy and fortunate to have Mr. Runcie as our new Superintendent and look forward to working with him," said School Board Chair Benjamin J. Williams.
Runcie was most recently Chief of Staff to the Board of Education, Chicago Public Schools, Chicago, Illinois, the third largest school district in the nation, with 410,000 students. He holds both a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Harvard College and Master of Management degree from Northwestern University. He is also a Broad Fellow, having completed an education executive training program presented by the prestigious Broad Superintendents Academy.
"I am honored and excited to serve the Broward County School District and the Broward County community, and look forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead," said Runcie. "I'm committed to providing the leadership and support necessary to give our students and our community the world-class education they deserve," he said.
Runcie had been tapped to take charge of the nation's sixth largest public school system following a national search, which began in May. Board members voted on September 14 to offer Runcie the District's top job. He will serve as the 20th superintendent in the history of Broward County Public Schools.
