Broward Schools Press Release

Fourth Grade Students at Hawkes Bluff Elementary School Celebrate Cultural Diversity

WHO: Hawkes Bluff Elementary School Fourth Grade Students

WHAT: "Celebrate Me" – a special presentation and international feast celebrating cultural diversity

WHEN: Thursday, December 15, 2011, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

WHERE: Hawkes Bluff Elementary School, Art Room
5900 SW 160th Avenue, Davie

WHY: This celebration is a culmination of two classes' study in cultural diversity. The goal was to motivate students to learn about themselves and in turn, share experiences with their families and community. Students embraced the project by collecting facts and information about their backgrounds and history. Students conducted research online and interviewed family members and collected family trees, photographs, flags and souvenirs, which represented them.

Hawkes Bluff students involved with project were touched by this experience. "I personally learned that each person is different and that we should accept people for who they are. I also think it is interesting to learn about different cultures and where each person comes from," shared fourth grade student Alex Gallinal. "I've learned that you should never judge a book by its cover. No one would ever believe I was half Cuban. I have blonde hair and blue eyes."
