On Tuesday (September 20) at 11 a.m. Broward County Public Schools will learn if it is the winner of the Broad (rhymes with "road") Prize, presented by the California based Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation. This is the third time the District has been named as a finalist for the prestigious award, considered to be the "Pulitzer Prize" in the field of education. The District was a finalist in both 2008 and 2009.

The award is presented to school districts that demonstrate the best overall performance and improvement in student achievement, while reducing achievement gaps among poor and minority students.

As a finalist, BCPS is guaranteed a minimum of $150,000 in college scholarships for its graduating seniors in 2012. The winner will receive $550,000 in scholarships. Other finalists include: Miami-Dade Public Schools; Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, North Carolina and Ysleta Independent School District, El Paso, Texas.

The award ceremony will be held in the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C., and will be streamed live online on the District's website (www.browardschools.com). The ceremony will feature remarks by Washington, D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray, and a keynote address by John Legend, GRAMMY award winner and education reform activist. The Broad Prize winner will be announced by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and philanthropist Eli Broad.

The Broad Foundation has invited Broward School Board Chair Benjamin J. Williams; Interim Superintendent Donnie Carter and former Superintendent James F. Notter to attend the ceremony as the Foundation's guests. School Board members Maureen S. Dinnen and Ann Murray also plan to travel, at their own expense, to Washington, D.C. for the ceremony.
