Broward Students Re-enacted Historic March
On Washington.
On Friday, February 21, 2003, students from North Side, Lauderdale Manors,
Pompano Beach, Thurgood Marshall and Walker Elementary schools and Sunrise
Middle were joined by the City of Fort Lauderdale and State Attorney
General Charlie Crist for a
re-enactment of the historic "March on Washington."
The march attracted as many as 2,000 participants was complete with songs
and placards with messages of peace, tolerance and acceptance. The march
kick-offed at 9:30 a.m. at Warfield Park in Fort Lauderdale. Participants
marched along Andrews Avenue at 13th Street at NE 1st Street and back
to Warfield Park with a culminating program showcasing each school in
honor of Black History Month.
Students had many opportunities to experience black American heritage
and culture through guest speakers, art exhibits, assemblies, film festivals,
field trips, special performances and presentations of history, poetry,
literature, dance, music, fashion, food and much more.
