SUBJECT: Broward County Public School Teachers Rehired (7/23/09)

The School Board of Broward County, Florida, is making continuous progress to place many of its 394 recently laid-off teachers back to work.  To date, 151 teachers have been placed or separated from employment. Teachers on the recall list are noticed, based on the match of their certification(s), to vacancies which become available.

Two hundred forty-three (243) teachers remain on the District’s recall list, for which a position is not available in their certification area at the current time. The District is making every effort, as open positions are declared, to get teachers back in the classrooms.

This week, the District’s Instructional Staffing Department has posted advertisements externally to fill teacher vacancies in which no layoff teacher has been found with a certification match. Interested applicants may access these jobs by visiting the employment link on District’s Web site at  (www.browardschools.com/departments/employment/).

The 54 Instructional Facilitator positions advertised resulted in 42 employees being hired, opening 26 vacancies for layoff teachers. The remaining 16 positions are coach positions or positions for which the District has no layoff teachers with a certification or qualifications match.  The 42 positions will be added to next week’s total teacher recall number due to staff notification procedures.

The recall process begins with the teacher being sent a letter via certified mail informing them of their updated job status.  Teachers have 72 hours from receipt of the certified letter to respond to the District’s Instructional Staffing department in writing, either accepting or declining their new position.  This notice process meets the requirement in the Broward Teachers Union (BTU) contract.  In an additional effort by the District to contact recalled teachers during the summer, a scanned copy of the letter is also sent for response via the CAB (Communicating Across Broward), the District E-mail network.

Broward County Public Schools is the nation's sixth largest public school system and the largest fully accredited district with over 250,000 students in more than 260 schools and education centers.
