Colonel James Armstrong, the District's Curriculum Specialist for JROTC, was recently named the nation's Director of Army Instruction of the Year 2009 by the United States Army's Cadet Command.
Colonel Armstrong received the award at the September 1, 2009 Broward County School Board meeting. Colonel Fransisco Betacourt, Brigade Commander of the Sixth ROTC Brigade headquartered in Savannah, Georgia, presented the award on behalf of the US Army's Cadet Command.
Armstrong was selected for the honor because of the dedication, effectiveness and leadership he has demonstrated in his position, as well as his contributions to the achievements of the mission of JROTC. The award represents exemplary performance and sets the standard for the 55 National Directors of Army Instruction.
Under Colonel Armstrong’s leadership, Broward County Public Schools has installed JROTC programs (representing all four military services) in all 29 traditional high schools, becoming the largest school system in the nation with a JROTC program in every traditional high school. East of the Mississippi River, only Chicago Public Schools has more JROTC programs than Broward County.
Colonel James Armstrong has served Broward County Public Schools since August of 1993.
