Broward County Public Schools officials yesterday announced the District’s 2009/10 Twentieth Day Student Count. The District’s total enrollment for the 2009/10 school year on the twentieth day, Monday, September 21, is 255,203, representing pre-kindergarten through grade 12 students enrolled in the District’s 288 schools (141 elementary, 42 middle, 33 high schools, 16 centers and 56 charter schools).

District enrollment decreased by 535 students from the 2008/09 school year.

The District’s elementary schools have 106,739 students (4,244 in pre-kindergarten and 102,495 in kindergarten through grade five). Middle schools (grades six through eight) have 52,952 students enrolled, while grades nine through 12 have 70,234 students.  The District has 4,676 students in its centers, while 20,602 students attend charter schools.

The count reflects decreases in elementary, middle and high school enrollment and increases in pre-kindergarten, centers and charter school enrollment, when compared to the 2008/09 report. Overall, elementary school (K-5) enrollment dropped by 1,868 students, middle school totals fell by 891 students and high school attendance decreased by six students.

Pre-kindergarten (+242), centers (+84) and charter schools (+1,904) produced higher enrollment totals than one year ago.

The 2009/10 school year started on Monday, August 24 with a First Day Enrollment count of 231,495.

Demographic information, including ethnicity breakdowns, English Language Learners (ELL), Exceptional Student Education (ESE) and Free and Reduced Lunches, will be reported in the final Twentieth Day Enrollment Report, to be released by the end of the week.
