    SUBJECT: Twenty-Three High School Seniors Named National Achievement Scholarship Semifinalists


    Twenty-three (23) Broward County Public High School seniors were named semifinalists for National Achievement Scholarship Awards, presented by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). These students are part of more than 1,600 Black American high school seniors who have been designated semifinalists in the 46th annual National Achievement Scholarship Program. These scholastically talented young men and women now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 800 Achievement Scholarship awards, worth some $2.6 million, to be offered next spring.

    Below is the list of semifinalists from Broward County Public Schools:

    Blanche Ely HS: Schneider Rancy; College Academy at Broward College: Adaeze C. Ajoku, Nicole L. Franklin, Krishni L. Metivier, Sebastian P. Poitevien and Marc A. Warrior; Cooper City HS: Ruben Pierre-Antoine; Cypress Bay HS: Monet D. Bell; Deerfield Beach HS: Javaughn A. Lawrence; Dillard HS: Sean J. Heron; Everglades HS: Sean A. Fletcher; Flanagan HS: Karah A. Collins, Olivia M. Gooden and Ashley R. Richmond; Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS: Joshua A. Byrnes and Terrence A. Chin-Loy; Miramar HS: Peter E. Orlando; Nova HS: Kristine V. Chambers and Oriana V. Ellis; Pompano Beach HS: Yvanna Harris and Ravelle T. Nunes; Somerset Academy HS: Briana Gabriel; South Plantation HS: Whitney L. Walters.

    The National Achievement Scholarship Program is a privately financed academic competition that operates without government assistance. It was initiated in 1964 to recognize academically promising black students throughout the nation and to provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding program participants. To date, over 29,500 young men and women have received Achievement Scholarship awards worth $94 million.
