BECON-TV, a television station owned and operated by the School Board of Broward County, is hosting an interactive distance learning outreach presentation for students to participate in a cervical spine surgical procedure at Memorial Healthcare System on Tuesday, November 10 at 8:30 a.m. Dr. Greg Zorman, a former Chief of Staff for Memorial Regional Hospital and current Chief of Neurosurgery for Memorial Healthcare System, will perform the surgery.

Videoconferencing allows students to participate in interactive presentations and instruction without leaving their classroom. A pre and post test will be administered to the students, who will also receive a reference guide about the procedure.

Sixteen high schools will participate in this interactive program. This collaboration allows students to take a virtual field trip into the operating room at Memorial Healthcare System, an event many may never experience again. 

Ten high schools (Blanche Ely, Coral Glades, Cypress Bay, Dillard, Hallandale, McArthur, South Plantation, Stranahan, West Broward and Western) will participate in the distance learning presentation, with six (Piper, Boyd Anderson, Coral Springs, Hollywood Hills, Miramar and Seagull School) viewing the event.

The primary goal of the District’s Distance Learning Outreach program is to seek out organizations and communities that will provide students with learning experiences through the use of 21st Century Technology.
