The Board approved resolutions in support of the following:

Florida Jewish History Month, January 2006 - Among the many ethnic groups that have arrived in Florida since 1513, Jews have made significant contributions to the rich heritage and culture of the state.

Black History Month, February 2006 – It is an annual observance that recognizes the significant and numerous achievements of African Americans, their many contributions to the growth and development of this country, and their past and current status in this country and the world.

Groundhog Job Shadow Week, January 23 – 27, 2006 - The Board recognizes the importance of Groundhog Job Shadow Week in Broward County Public Schools in providing academically motivating educational activites that give students an opportunity to explore careers. Groundhog Job Shadow Week provides students a firsthand look at the world of work.

APPROVED
CONTINUATION AGREEMENT WITH THE BROWARD CULTURAL COUNCIL FOR ARTS
Since 1984, the School Board and the Broward Cultural Council have worked as partners to provide cultural and artistic services to schools.  In 1994, the parties redesigned cultural services to specifically support student-learning objectives identified in school improvement plans.  The Arts in Education program continued through the 2001-02 school year and was re-implemented during the 2003-04 school year.  Annual evaluations conducted by the Department of Research and Evaluation on the Arts in Education program reflect that program objectives to facilitate student achievement and enable students at all levels to become appreciators and providers of the arts have been met. The continuation agreement between the Broward County Affairs and the School Board is designed to support education through the arts.

CONTINUATION OF THE COLLEGE BOARD SPRINGBOARD CONTRACT
The Board approved the continuation of the College Board SpringBoard contract, a comprehensive curricular support program built upon national standards necessary for success in college.  The program provides in-depth training for all math and English teachers, online support and assessment, and ongoing mentorship through The College Board.  The goal of the program is to prepare all middle school students for the rigor of high school advanced/honors course work. The contract includes SpringBoard implementation in the following 19 Title One middle schools: Apollo, Arthur Ashe, Attucks, Bair, Crystal Lake, Deerfield Beach, Driftwood, Margate, Millennium, McNicol, Olsen, Parkway, Pompano Beach, Silver Lakes, Lauderhill, New River, Henry D. Perry, Rickards, and Sunrise.

AGREEMENT WITH NASA FOR THE EXPLORER SCHOOL PROGRAM
The Board approved a three-year agreement with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Explorer School for a partnership between NASA and South Plantation High School for the NASA Explorer Program (NES). The goal of the NES program is to increase student achievement and interest in the science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and geography fields. Students will benefit from direct access to NASA personnel; engage in exciting learning projects and travel to NASA field centers to conduct scientific experiments. Staff members will also have access to NASA led staff development and opportunities to travel to various NASA field centers for professional development.  Only fifty schools from across the country are accepted in the NES program each year.  South Plantation High School will become one of only three NES high schools in the nation.

AGREEMENT WITH SCHOOL BUS MEDIA, INC. TO ESTABLISH INTERIOR DISPLAY PROGRAM IN DISTRICT SCHOOL BUSES
The Board approved an agreement with School Bus Media, Inc. to establish an interior display program in District school buses. Broward County Public Schools joins a number of school districts across the country that are looking at school bus advertising programs as a way to provide students with positive messages while increasing the funds available to support school and district programs. Although some districts’ programs are clearly “advertising,” Broward’s program will focus on sponsored messages that reinforce District approved initiatives such as reading, career exploration, character education, goal setting, personal safety and health and wellness. This agreement is the result of a process that included input from the District’s Advertising Committee, two presentations to the School Board and a Request for Letters of Inquiry process, which included input from the Transportation, Community Involvement and Purchasing departments. The District’s Advertising Committee, which includes Board members Stephanie A. Kraft and Darla L. Carter (alternate Marty Rubinstein), will provide program oversight, with staff support from the Community Involvement Department.

The Board approved the following appointments: Frank Alfieri, Timothy Arahill, Gerald Devio Scott Gillen, Michael Solley, Brian Swantek, and James Carballo, Project Managers I; Alberto Destrade, Director, Real Estate & Environmental Planning; Ivan Perrone, Treasury Manager; Mohammed Rasheduzzaman, Planner, Growth Management Monitoring; Vanishree Shimoga, Project Manager, Enterprise Resource Planning.

SCHOOLS AND STAFF IN ACTION
BROWARD TEACHER OF THE YEAR 2007 FINALISTS NAMED

The committee selects Broward’s top teacher. The District’s “Best of the Best” will be honored at the 2007 Teacher of the Year event scheduled for Wednesday, January 25, 11:30 a.m. at the Broward County Convention Center.
