Highlights of the 9/1/09 School Board Meeting
"Schools and Staff in Action"

SPECIAL PRESENTATION
COL. JAMES ARMSTRONG  NAMED THE NATION'S DIRECTOR OF ARMY INSTRUCTION OF THE YEAR, 2008/09
Colonel James Armstrong, the District Curriculum Specialist for JROTC, was named the nation's  Director of Army Instruction of the year 2008/09. The award was presented by Colonel Fransisco Betancourt, Brigade Commander for the 6th ROTC Brigade, Savannah, Georgia. The award represents exemplary performance and sets the standard for the 55 National Directors of Army Instruction. Under Colonel Armstrong's leadership, Broward County Public Schools has installed JROTC programs in all 29 traditional high schools, becoming the largest school system in the nation with a JROTC program in every traditional high school. East of the Mississippi River, only Chicago Public Schools has more JROTC programs than Broward County.

RESOLUTIONS
SCHOOL BOARD RECOGNIZES HEROIC EFFORTS OF HOLLYWOOD HILLS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYERS, COACH
The Board recognized the courage displayed by Hollywood Hills High School football coach Scott Barnwell and players Clarence Murphy, Alvin Arnold, Anthony Yerou and Jared Maldonado in their heroic efforts to rescue a Flagler Beach family from a car crash outside Clewiston on July 12, 2009. The group noticed a man frantically trying to wave down help for an SUV that overturned in a canal.   The rescue efforts resulted in James Bryan and his two-year-old granddaughter surviving the accident. The players did everything possible to save the life of Juanita Carrillo Bryan, who later passed away due to complications from the accident.

BOARD SUPPORTS GREEN SCHOOLS COMMITTEE OF UNITED STATES GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL (USGBC)
The School Board recognizes the increasing importance of green and sustainable practices in operations, renovations and new construction. The Board supports and recognizes the Green Schools Committee of the USGBC (South Florida Chapter, Broward Branch) as a valuable asset, which it will call on for educational resources in green practices, increased energy efficiency, improved air quality, effective use of water resources, cost savings and responsible environmental stewardship.

APPROVED
BOARD APPROVES AGREEMENT WITH SUMMER INTERNATIONAL GROUP
The Board approved an agreement with Summer International Group (Roasted Bean) to provide a nutritionally-based menu available for purchase to employees and visitors of the District's main headquarters, the Kathleen C. Wright Administrative Center (KCW). Additionally, Summer International Group will provide supplies necessary to deliver a balanced food menu at KCW; develop a food preparation and service-training program for transition students through employment and provide job placement and continued employment at other commercial sites for transition students. Further, the food concession will provide a percentage of revenue from sales to the District. This agreement supports the District's Strategic Plan for Wellness, Goal E - schools and staff will have an environment that supports the consumption of healthy foods by students and their families.

BOARD APPROVES AGREEMENT WITH THE NORTH BROWARD HOSPITAL DISTRICT
The Board approved a new agreement with The North Broward Hospital District (d/b/a Broward Health). Health Science Education programs provide secondary and postsecondary career and technical students with clinical learning experiences through agreements with hospitals, nursing homes and other facilities. On-site clinical experiences are necessary to meet curriculum frameworks, student performance standards and requirements of regulatory agencies for students to qualify for certification/licensure examinations upon program completion. The District has Allied Health Assisting, Patient Care Assisting and Practical Nursing Programs at 21 high schools.

The Board approved the following appointments: Donald Gardner, Interim Principal, Park Lakes Elementary and Jorene Jameson, President/CEO, Broward Education Foundation ("BEF") Inc.

SCHOOLS AND STAFF IN ACTION
DISTRICT ANNOUNCES FIRST DAY ENROLLMENT COUNT FOR 2009/10 SCHOOL YEAR
On Monday, August 24, Broward County Public Schools announced that 231,495 students attended its schools. The District's 2009/10 first-day enrollment count increased by 287 students, when compared to last year's 231,208 first-day enrollment mark. The student enrollment count includes all students who were in attendance at all schools, including charters and centers. The increases in student enrollment were seen in high schools, centers and charter schools. High school enrollment increased by 1,625 students, centers attendance increased by 218 and students attending charter schools increased by 2,142 students. Pre-K, elementary and middle schools enrollment decreased by a combined total of 3,698 students.

36,875 FATHERS PARTICIPATE IN MILLION FATHER MARCH
This year, 36,875 fathers or male guardians of Broward County Public Schools students participated in the Million Father March on Monday, August 24. Members of several local community groups partnered with the District to encourage fathers to accompany their children to school on the first day of classes. Research shows that children whose fathers take an active role in their educational lives earn better grades, get better test scores, enjoy school more and are more likely to graduate from high school and attend college.
