Under provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), schools that receive federal Title 1 funding and fail to meet the government’s Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) standards for two or more consecutive years must offer students an opportunity to change schools. In a letter recently sent home with students, District officials remind parents of the law, the importance of meeting required deadlines and the need to verify their home mailing address.
Since all future information regarding School Choice and Supplemental Educational Services (SES) will be sent by mail, it is extremely important that schools have students’ current home addresses. If a child’s address has changed, parents should notify the school immediately. If a Title 1 school does not meet its AYP goal for three consecutive years, students can do one of the following:
- continue to attend their current school;
- request a transfer to another school based on a menu of choices. The parent choice cannot be guaranteed. However, all parents who make the choice for their child to attend a school other than their home school will be assigned to an available receiving school.
or
- if the student qualifies for Free/Reduced Lunch, remain at his/her current school and receive tutoring (SES).
Parents of a child attending a Title 1 school, that fails to meet the AYP
criteria, should receive a letter with information regarding School Choice
options later this summer. School principals will have additional information regarding AYP for their schools. IF you have questions, please contact your child's school or the NCLB Office at (754) 321-3030. |
