Siraj Alsafar: Rickards Middle School
By C. Ron Allen
South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Age: 13

School: Rickards Middle School

Grade: Eighth

Hometown:Oakland Park

Trait: Kindness
Siraj created a program two years ago that collects and sends school supplies overseas to needy Iraqi children. He is always willing to assist his peers and staff, teachers said. The Siraj School Supply Drive brings the school together, creates friendly competition among students and is an act of kindness. He also helps with other school projects, particularly the National Junior Honor Society.

Teacher, Holly Maier: "In a time of war and fear of others, he makes our community realize that there are other children in need in a country and we can rise above any prejudice or preconceived notions to help."

Parent, Sabah Alsafar: "Great! He is just like myself. I care for others."

Siraj Alsafar: "I can feel what goes on [over there] and I can't stand and don't do something. I have a chance, so I did what I did."

This is one in a series of stories on students who best exemplify the Broward County School District's eight character education traits -- cooperation, responsibility, citizenship, kindness, respect, honesty, self-control and tolerance -- and patriotism as part of all eight.
