Dear Educators,

As the curtain begins to rise on a new season of SEAS performances, we are delighted to invite you once again to bring your students to participate in this award-winning arts in education program. Designed to enhance learning through the arts, the SEAS Program brings literature to life on stage.

Now entering its 18th year, this unique partnership between the School Board of Broward County and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts continues to break attendance records. This school year, our students and teachers can enjoy performances at four locations in Broward County, including the Broward Center, the historic Parker Playhouse in Fort Lauderdale, Coral Springs Center for the Arts and the brand new Miramar Cultural Center/Arts Park, allowing us to better serve the growing population in our western school areas.

On April 23, 2008, we were delighted to welcome Charnita Florvilus from Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary as the two millionth student to attend an educational performance at the Broward Center. This milestone celebrates the important role that the arts play in accelerating student achievement by actively engaging them in arts-integrated learning activities. A growing volume of research reinforces the strong connection between learning through the arts and student advancement in creativity, critical thinking and the motivation to succeed at higher levels. The SEAS Program successfully demonstrates this year after year.

As you glance through this guide, you’ll see that SEAS offers a wide range of options covering subjects from social studies, music and cultural heritage to reading-based performances which form the nucleus of the program. These performances are highlighted in the listings with a “reading-based” icon. Also, study guides are available for each show to help teachers prepare their students to get the most out of every performance.

Along with our many workshops, Discover Broadway, Cultural Adventures, the annual teachers’ conference, SEAS Plus, Teachers Lounge and the variety of offerings we make available to our educators and students,

We’ll see you at the theater!

Regards,
