Wednesday, November 29, 2017

The third annual Speaking for the Future Debate Initiative Luncheon was attended by a record 200 guests, making it the largest fundraising luncheon in support of more than 12,000 students Districtwide competing in speech and debate. The event showcased debate performances by students from Cypress Bay High School, Everglades High School, Flanagan High School, Walker Elementary School, Western High School and Pompano Youth Treatment Center.

“Speech and debate are lifelong skills. That’s why I am so passionate about it,” said School Board Member Laurie Rich Levinson. "Debate also encompasses research, organizational skills, critical thinking, everything all wrapped up in one that we’re trying to teach our students."

All of the proceeds from the luncheon go toward supporting students in their tournament and competitive endeavors, covering transportation to and from debate tournaments, supplies, competition entry fees and out-of-county field trips.
