Though I usually write about privacy issues, I am switching gears to focus on student achievement. As the facilitator for the Parent/Community Involvement Task Force, I often interact with parents who volunteer. At our recent Middle School Forum, one dedicated parent, Janet Bravo, proudly showed me an iPhone video of her daughter Julia, a senior at McArthur High, playing “The Star Spangled Banner” on trumpet at a recent football game. It was so amazing and moving, I inquired if Julia would want to perform the song at the High School Forum (November 2014), and she said yes. Soon before that great performance, we learned that Julia had been chosen to participate in the 2015 High School Honors Orchestra this February at Carnegie Hall! She is representing the finest of high school performers internationally. The Task Force and the District congratulate Julia on this exciting honor.
