Friday Focus is a weekly roundup of BCPS news highlights by the Public Information Office. This weekly news summary includes a recap of BCPS news releases and news featured by our media partners. This week’s Friday Focus highlights the District transitioning through recovery and reopening following Hurricane Irma. Also, congratulations to the 53 BCPS students named semifinalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program, and learn more about the upcoming 3rd annual College Fair, the South Florida Gifted and Talented Symposium, and much more.

In this week’s Friday Focus, Superintendent Robert W. Runcie kicks off his “Celebrating Excellence Tour” visit to schools, and Boyd H. Anderson High School unveils its new media center – a $2 million media center as part of the District’s SMART program improvements. Also, learn how you can join Broward County Public Schools efforts to support Hurricane Harvey relief efforts, and mark your calendars for the upcoming Attendance Symposium, 2017 College Fair and Gifted and Talented Symposium.

Welcome to the first Friday Focus of the new school year! This week’s Friday Focus recaps news of an exciting first week of school. Highlights include preparations across the District for more than 270,000 students and 15,000 teachers returning to classrooms, and the successful launch of the 2017/18 school year. In this week’s Friday Focus, Superintendent Robert W. Runcie thanks students, teachers, administrators, staff, parents and community members for their hard work, support and yearlong focus on excellence in education. Also, congratulations to Manatee Bay Elementary School fifth grade students crowned national champions in the First in Math Online Program, and to the 23 high school students named winners of National Merit Scholarships sponsored by U.S. colleges and universities.

In this week’s Friday Focus, students from Margate Middle School celebrate winning the 2016/17 Vocabulary Bowl with a No. 1 ranking across North America, students from all three Turnaround Arts Schools perform at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, the latest BCPS Podcast shares information about the SMART Bond Program - Focus on Facilities, and much more.

In this week’s Friday Focus, congratulations goes to Margate Middle School for winning the 2016/17 Vocabulary Bowl, ranking No. 1 across North America in the Middle School Championship, Seagull School Center students showcase their diversity and pride for their home country Haiti, during Haitian Flag Day celebration, and Pompano Beach Middle School debate students showcase their talents to members of the Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce Education Committee, and much more. 

In this week’s Friday Focus, the fifth annual Autism in Fight “takes off” at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport for students with autism and their families, the latest BCPS podcast real talk focuses on the importance of early literacy, the District unveils its new Supplier Diversity Outreach Program for small businesses, and much more.

In this week’s Friday Focus, students at Orange Brook Elementary School experience real-life lesson on democracy to save trees on their school’s campus, and students at Coral Springs High School host a dance marathon to raise over $10,000 for Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. Also, BCPS high schools are named among the nation’s “Best High Schools” and “America’s Most Challenging High Schools.”

In this week’s Friday Focus, students at The Quest Center create magic through music, drama and expressive art, and the District honors Kids and Staff of Character.
