Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is being awarded an $11.9 million federal grant to create and expand six elementary magnet schools that will specialize in STEM – science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The three-year Magnet Schools Assistance Grant, awarded from the U.S. Department of Education, will be used to expand choice options for students, increase student achievement, and prepare students for jobs and careers in these fields.
The grant will support BCPS in creating four new magnet programs at elementary schools and expanding two current magnet schools into comprehensive Sprouting STEM Museum Magnet Schools. The schools utilizing the grant funding include:
Atlantic West Elementary School (Margate)
Broward Estates Elementary School (Lauderhill)
Colbert Elementary School (Hollywood)
Liberty Elementary School (Margate)
Plantation Elementary School (Plantation)
Royal Palm Elementary School (Lauderhill)
“This competitive grant will ensure that our students receive a high-quality education that prepares them at an earlier age to meet the challenges of our global economy,” said Broward Schools Superintendent Robert W. Runcie. “This grant will help schools provide our students with a world-class education.”
The Sprouting STEM Museum Magnet Schools classrooms will be designed to parallel the museum process of researching, exploring, experimenting, explaining and exhibiting. The creative and inquisitive nature of students will expand, as they perceive science, technology, engineering and mathematics through the mind and eyes of a museum curator. Schools will optimize resources by partnering with museums across the globe, STEM-related businesses, colleges and universities, parents and community members.
