Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) high school juniors at six schools had the unique opportunity to take the ACT and College Board's SAT during their regular school day. On April, 28, 2015, Charles W. Flanagan, Miramar and McArthur high schools administered the ACT to juniors, while J.P. Taravella, Fort Lauderdale, and Deerfield Beach high schools administered the SAT to juniors on April 15, 2015. These six pilot schools are part of a District study to review the impact on students’ access to these tests in preparation for college admissions.
These college admissions tests are part of a national initiative that provides high school juniors' access to preparation prior to the test. With the ACT and SAT typically scheduled during the weekend, School Day exams aim to break down the barriers that may prevent students from taking the exam due to a limited number of testing locations, financial needs, lack of test prep opportunities and finding transportation to a weekend test site.
"College admissions test scores weigh heavily in admissions and play a big role in the awarding of scholarships," said Brian Kingsley, executive director of Instruction and Intervention. “Allowing students better access to these tests can level the playing field for all students and support college and career readiness within our high schools."
Students that are unable to pay for the College Board SAT will also be awarded four college application fee waivers to use in applying to colleges and universities. In addition, students will have access to the official SAT online course, as well as other college planning tools that provide comprehensive information to guide students in their groundwork for SAT and research of colleges and universities.
