Students Reach Out to Needy Families During the Holiday Season

Friday, November 14, 2014
For the 22nd consecutive year, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) students, parents and community supporters have joined Harvest Drive, Inc. to help needy families during the holiday season. The Harvest Drive is a yearlong project culminating in a charitable event involving schools across the District every Thanksgiving.
“Children Helping Children” is the theme of this year’s Harvest Drive event, with over 190 Broward schools hosting efforts to reach the goal of providing 2,200 families with a Thanksgiving dinner.
Students are leading the charge collecting non-perishable food for the Harvest Drive. High school clubs are collecting large quantities of food donations from Publix and Wal-Mart supermarkets throughout the county. Community businesses, corporations, civic organizations, Parent Teacher Associations, volunteer organizations, and individual donors are providing monetary donations to purchase perishable food and gift cards.
The Harvest Drive incorporates all aspects of philanthropy by promoting the concept of children and adults working hand-in-hand to offer needy families in Broward County gifts of food and other necessities during the Thanksgiving holiday and beyond. The event assists in educating students and creating a consciousness about the needs in the community, promoting altruism and giving students an opportunity to help others.
