Internet Essentials for Families on Free Lunch Program
Avoid the digital divide... Interesting stat: 52% of children aged 5 – 8 years old use smart phones, videos, iPods, IPads, etc. 4 in 10 2 – 4 years olds do.
Low-income Broward County families can now take advantage of a new Comcast program providing low-cost Internet service, affordable computers and free training classes to families with children who receive free school lunches. Today the cable TV company officially rolls out the Broward County component of the program, first announced in South Florida two weeks ago during a Miami event. The goal of Comcast's Internet Essentials program is to help close the digital divide for more low-income families by offering affordable Web service, an inexpensive computer for the home, and free online, print and in-person computer training, said South Florida Comcast spokesperson Spero Canton. Canton said details on how families can sign up for the benefits - along with an application - will be sent home with Broward County students on the first day of school. Families who have a Broward public school student in the National Free Lunch program should automatically qualify for the Internet Essentials program. They can sign up for high-speed Internet service for $9.95 a month and receive a voucher to buy a computer for less than $150. Comcast expects to launch its Internet Essentials program soon in Palm Beach County as well.
