Greetings, Rickards Community,
Welcome to the 2018-19 school. I am Dr. Washington B. Collado and I have been proudly serving as the principal of James S. Rickards Middle School for the past five years. I’m truly excited to celebrate my 32nd year of education in this great learning organization. I was born in the Dominican Republic and migrated to New York where I attended public schools. Subsequently, I graduated from Queens College of the City University of New York where I specialized in Secondary Education. Most recently, I graduated with a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Florida Atlantic University. In essence, education has been my life: teaching, leading, and learning.
During the 2017-18 school year, Rickards Middle School students had great academic gains in practically all curricular areas. Furthermore, our students excelled in technology classes, robotics, STEM initiatives, fine arts, and much more. Over the past five years together, we have seen teachers and staff truly work with students to maximize their potential.
This year we are continuing to expand on this progress. We are “On ‘A’ mission to be Outstanding.” With the rigor, coupled with the expansion of our dynamic programs, students will be motivated to continue on their path towards college and career readiness. Our students have the opportunity to participate in a plethora of advanced and elective classes. These courses and programs are offered in a synergistic articulation with high school courses.
Rickards Middle proudly celebrates the arts as we look for every opportunity to engage our students in extra-curricular activities. We have a complete music and arts program with state-of-the-art musical instruments. In addition, we have a fully equipped keyboard classroom for our students to learn piano and/or keyboard. Through these programs, our students are able to display their music and arts talent in events throughout the District and community. Furthermore, our athletic program offers all sports available to Broward County middle schools students.
Finally, Rickards Middle School is privileged to enjoy the support and involvement of our parents, community leaders, and the city and elected officials from the City of Oakland Park. The partnership that exists between our school and stakeholders is the final ingredient to our success. Let’s continue to enhance our students’ learning experiences as we ALL continue to work to maximize their full potential.
Washington B. Collado,
