Physical Plant Operations (PPO)
Physical Plant Operations (PPO) is responsible for all aspects of preventative, routine, and emergency maintenance of BCPS facilities. It is an all-encompassing maintenance operation that is inclusive of multiple professional trades which supports all aspects of Capital Projects from estimating through completion. The Department was developed to maintain the interior and exterior of school buildings throughout their useful life; the grounds and roadways; and all fixed and moveable equipment through preventive maintenance and repairs.
The Department consists of a supervisor, assistant supervisors, coordinator of environmental safety, secretary, material handlers, floating custodians, and an equipment repair technician. There are building supervisors, shift foremen, and over 200 custodial staff to clean and maintain 236 schools and the Central Office. They are responsible for cleaning about 35 million square feet of building space along with mowing and maintaining BCPS properties.
We work towards ensuring that the proper environment is provided while managing the efficient use of all resources. Personnel provides assistance and service to the schools on a daily basis to perform custodial duties and minor preventive maintenance to the building equipment. We are also responsible for grounds maintenance, landscaping, and improvements to athletic fields.
