Dear Tiger Family,
It is with great enthusiasm that I welcome you to the 2018-19 school year. My staff and I have been hard at work preparing the curriculum and our campus for an exciting year of teaching and learning. While our school grade remains the same our graduation rate of 90% continues to excel due to the stability in academic teaching practices as demonstrated by our teachers.
In light of recent events, I want to assure you that the safety of your child and every staff member continues to be my number one priority. Our school safe team has devised an organized, systematic emergency plan to reduce risks in the event of a crisis situation. It is my expectation that parents talk with their child about school safety. In an event of a crisis situation, a school official will notify parents with timely information on the status of the situation on our campus.
Any conversation with a child should be developmentally appropriate. As a parent, you are the best resource to help your child cope. Parents should stress the role that students have in maintaining safe schools by following safety guidelines (e.g., not providing building access to strangers, reporting strangers on campus, reporting threats made by students or community members, etc.). Additionally, students will be required to wear an ID Badge around their necks at all times. This will help identify our students and will add an extra feeling of security on campus.
Superintendent Mr. Robert Runcie and District officials have been leading efforts to emphasize Social and Emotional Learning in the Broward County School District. Blanche Ely High School staff will ensure our students receive high quality instruction in an aligned and a coherent system while addressing their social and emotional needs in a safe and engaging environment. It is also my intent to ensure that safety and academic programs are monitored simultaneously.
This year’s academic focus will continue to be on standard-driven content areas through research-based resources. In the past, our students have shown remarkable resilience on State Standard Assessments such as English Language Arts (ELA) and End of Course (EOCs) assessments, and CTE Vocational Certifications. The College and Career Readiness Pathways provides successful transitions between high school and college or work, which allow students to gain the skills, knowledge, and expertise needed for their postsecondary success.
Parents, through strong collaboration the success of students are immeasurable. Please consider partnering with us to improve Tiger success towards “Destination Excellence” by joining our SAF and SAC committees. We are focused on providing quality service with an emphasis on “Equity” and “Equality”. The partnership will ensure school officials are giving families, teachers, staff, and the community at large tools for a successful school year.
I look forward to sharing with you the many successes in the year ahead.
With Warmest Regards,
Dr. Karlton O. Johnson, Principal
