2021-2022… Here We Come!
First and foremost, we sincerely hope you made time to rest and enjoy your family this summer. Similarly, we hope you and your loved ones are all well amidst the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and successfully dealing with the many hardships directly associated with the pandemic. We are happy and excited to welcome you and your child to Riverland Elementary, a World Languages Magnet School.
As you know, we will welcome and open the 2021-2022 school year with face-to-face instruction, returning to what is commonly referred to as “normal” operating procedures. That stated, please trust that we will continue to exercise good judgement and adhere to safety protocols and guidelines in order to keep our students, ourselves, and our community as safe and healthy as possible. Accordingly, please note that we will continue to provide the personal protective equipment (PPE) and routinely disinfect and sanitize our school campus, as we’ve always done.
As always, Riverland Elementary School’s dedicated staff has planned for and looks forward to another exciting school year, filled with rewarding and positive learning experiences. Staying true to our theme, “Building A Strong C.O.R.E. (Community of Open-Minded and Resourceful Educators),” we will continue to work collaboratively with parents and community members to build new and strengthen existing relationships. Our continued collaboration will enable us to be more productive, achieve greater results, and create an environment where children are truly excited about learning. Fittingly, we thank you in advance for supporting your child, our efforts, and common goal, increasing student achievement through a quality education.
Having stated this, we strongly encourage you to remain active in your child’s education and schedule a minimum of two parent-teacher conferences this school year. Please note that parent-teacher conferences are by appointment and may be scheduled by contacting Mrs. Boorse at (754) 323-7200. All parent-teacher conferences are held on Wednesdays and Fridays from 2:30 PM to 3:00 PM. Moreover, parents/guardians are invited to review the Code of Student Conduct Handbook and complete the required forms by accessing the Back to School Forms link found on the Broward Schools’ webpage at: https://www.browardschools.com/backtoschool-onlineforms.
Our school days start promptly at 8:00 AM and conclude at 2:00 PM. All instructional days begin with 10 minutes of mindfulness, followed by quiet reading. As such, we respectfully request that you plan to have your children at school between 7:30 and 7:40 AM. Doing so will allow your children to transition into the learning mindset and provide them with the option to enjoy a free and nutritious breakfast in our school’s cafeteria.
Furthermore, please note that due to the State Class Size Reduction law, students may need to be moved between teachers after the start of school to ensure compliance with the required student limits. These limits are 18 students for kindergarten to grade three, and 22 students for grades four and five in core classes. Additional information on Class Size Reduction is available at https://webapp.browardschools.com/classsize/Classsize.aspx
As we prepare for the start of the new school year, we want to remind everyone that safety and security continue to be our top priority. As such, we will continue to utilize our single point of entry, through our front office, and keep classroom doors locked at all times. Additionally, all staff members and students will wear school identification badges at all times.
Likewise, we will continue to provide a safe and welcoming environment by closely monitoring access onto our school campus. Accordingly, our school gates will remain locked throughout the school day. Please make certain that you bring a form of photo identification when visiting our campus, as all visitors will be asked to present photo identification to access our campus. Please note that children will only be dismissed to those individuals identified on the Student Emergency Contact Card.
Additionally, we will continue to practice our monthly fire drills and bi-annual tornado drills. We will also practice Code Red drills and the safety practices outlined in our school’s safety plan on a monthly basis. However, please note that we will advise you via ParentLink when these drills take place, so that you are informed and not alarmed.
Please note that in accordance with Florida Statute 1012.34, parents have the right to provide input into the performance evaluations of instructional and/or administrative employees. Parents interested in providing input into the performance evaluations of Riverland Elementary School’s instructional and/or administrative employee evaluations may contact our office at (754) 323-7200 by April 8, 2022.
As our dedicated staff prepares for the start of the new school year, we wish to assure you that we do so with a greater sense of mindfulness. We are mindful that the families we proudly serve may be undergoing tremendously stressful times. We recognize that in addition to being concerned about their children’s academic well-being, they may also be concerned with maintaining their employment, securing food for their loved ones, and caring and providing for those who are ill or especially susceptible to the coronavirus. Subsequently, we want you to be mindful that we are a compassionate and understanding staff. As such, we want our students, parents, and community to know that we are far more concerned with you knowing how much we care, rather than how much our students know.
In closing, we welcome you to the 2021-2022 school year. As in past years, the plans and desire to work with and best serve our students are in place. However, we cannot do it alone. Therefore, I am encouraging all parents to attend our Title I Meet and Greet on Tuesday, August 17th, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Likewise, we ask that you plan attend our Title I Open House on Wednesday, September 1st, from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM. Please note that our Title I Meet and Greet and Open House will provide parents the opportunity to meet and learn about their children’s teachers, our unique world languages program, and the many wonderful things that are taking place at Riverland Elementary School.
