    Greetings Rock Island Family,

I am happy to announce our 2017-2018 Teacher and Non-Instructional staff member of the year. Ms. Fuller, Teacher of the Year and Ms. Smith, Non-Instructional Employee of the Year. They will represent Rock Island at the Caliber Awards. Take the time to congratulate them on such a great honor.

Join us for our PTA and SAC meeting on Wednesday, November 1st. We will begin the evening with a School Advisory Council meeting at 5:30 pm and a Parent Teacher Association meeting at 6:00 pm. RIE is a Title I School which affords our parents many opportunities to be active at school. Parents are always welcome at RIE!

I highly encourage you to attend our Scholastic Book Fair Night on Wednesday, October 18th at 6:00 pm.

As you all know our theme this year is “Blast Off to Proficiency and beyond!” Team RIE will strive to increase reading proficiency from 30% to 49%. Proficiency indicates that students are performing at or above grade level in a specific subject. Thirty percent of third, fourth and fifth grade students were able to read at a satisfactory level last year. Our school goal is to increase that percent by more than 19% or more this school year. We need your help and support to meet and attain our goal. Read with and to your child daily. There are websites and applications that can be found in Single Sign-On access to help you promote reading at home. Readers are Leaders!

I applaud all parents that follow the arrival and dismissal procedures. Your assistance with this matter helps our school community come to and leave school safety and quickly. All students were in receipt of a carpool sign to display to the right of the car dashboard at dismissal. Display the sign daily while in the car loop. Here are a few reminders:

    1. Car riders begin loading cars when they come outside to begin dismissal.
    2. Remain in your car. The process moves much quicker when teachers have less distractions. They must monitor all students for safety and to verify who picks up the child. It’s very difficult to impromptu conference and dismiss at the same time. Your help with this matter will keep our kids safe.
    3. When you arrive the carpool director reads the name of your child and announces the name through a loudspeaker. Your child will hear their name and a number and they walk to the respective number on the orange cone. The goal is to continue to flow of the cars, therefore, parents are NOT to exit their car. A staff member will locate your child if you do not see him/her when you pull up to the curb. When you remain in your car the process is seamless.
    4. Parents that WALK on campus and WALK of campus are to request that their child dismisses with east or west walkers. West walkers will be in the courtyard at 3:00 pm sharp. Teachers will note parents that continually walk up for dismissal and make the change on behalf of the administration to secure the carpool area. Parents are to write a note to the teacher to make the change prior to October 6th.

Thank you again for supporting our school. If you need any assistance, please reach out to your child’s teacher first. If there is something above and beyond, please feel free to contact the administrative team.

    Educationally Yours,

    Mrs. Cormic Priester
