    Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society

    The JP Taravella High School Social Studies department is excited to offer the invitation to all students to be a part of an exciting organization that recognizes success in the Social Studies field of study: history, economics, government, sociology, psychology and geography. “Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society is the only national organization for high school juniors and seniors that recognizes excellence in the field of Social Studies.” The goal of Rho Kappa is to promote the study of the Social Studies, but to also encourage the activities associated with the values of the Social Studies, such as citizenship, appreciation of the past, and a sense of community.

    How to Become a Member:

    Candidates for membership must:

    • Be a Junior or Senior
    • Have an unweighted Social Studies GPA: 3.5
    • Have an overall GPA: 3.0
    • Obtain one teacher recommendation outside the social studies and have the recommendation of your current social studies teacher.
    • Present evidence of community involvement

    Novice membership (members in training) is open to all sophomores who:

    • have an overall GPA of a 3.0
    • Obtain one teacher recommendation outside the social studies and have the recommendation of your current social studies teacher.

    Requirements of Rho Kappa members:

    Each member of the Rho Kappa organization will be expected to do the following to maintain membership in Rho Kappa.

    1. Participate in community service projects
    2. Pay a onetime $20 membership fee (includes shirt, fees for competition, club activities, graduation cords for seniors*)
    3. Attend the Rho Kappa initiation, introductory meeting, monthly meeting and at least 4 other Rho Kappa events throughout the year.
    4. Committed to academic achievement, to academic integrity, as well as to a year’s attendance and strict adherence to society’s requirement.
