    Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) welcomes students in-person for BCPS Summer 2021 Get Back! Get Ready! Reconnect!, an academic summer experience that takes place Monday, June 21 - Thursday, July 29. For a full day experience, BCPS and its partners offer morning and afternoon childcare, and BCPS Summer Camps offering enrichment opportunities and fun activities each afternoon.

  • This summer, BCPS is excited to offer a full range of academic programs, fun afternoon activities and camps, and practical childcare solutions designed to keep students safe and engaged for the entire day.  BCPS Summer 2021 includes two distinct options designed to give parents and families the greatest flexibility possible to keep their students busy all day. 

    The components of the day are:

    The Summer Experience - academics and face-to-face instruction
    The summer experience is open to all students in grades K-12 and takes place Monday, June 21 – Thursday, July 29.  The program is intended to help students get back on track academically, get ready for the next school year, and reconnect with their friends and teachers.

    Classes will be held at participating sites Monday through Thursday, for four hours per day (bell times vary by location).  Face-to-face instruction will be provided by BCPS-certified teachers. Breakfast and lunch will also be provided, and transportation is available for qualifying students. 

    Morning care, afternoon camps and activities

    There are different options for Pre-K in Broward County Public Schools this summer:

    Summer VPK

    Who: Children entering Kindergarten in August 2021 who did not use their 2020-2021 VPK Certificate or have utilized less than 70% (378 hours) of their 2020-2021VPK Certificate (a re-enrollment VPK Certificate is required to use this option).

    What: Fun and engaging instruction and activities designed to prepare children for successful entry into Kindergarten in the fall. Curriculum focuses on Kindergarten readiness and summer fun, with daily activities supporting social and emotional learning, explicit instruction in readiness skills, and cross-content investigations in gardening.

    When: June 21, 2021 – August 3, 2021, Monday – Thursday from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday – Thursday. Times may vary.

    How to Apply: Families must obtain the child's 2020-2021 VPK Certificate of Eligibility or 2020-2021 VPK Re-Enrollment Certificate of Eligibility through the State Family Portal and apply for one through the BCPS - VPK Parent Portal.

    Summer Learning Experience Pre-K

    Who:  Children currently enrolled in Pre-K programs in Broward County Public Schools, are entering Kindergarten in Fall 2021 (five years old by September 1, 2021) and are not participating in other BCPS Summer Pre-K Programs (Summer VPK, Pre-K ESE). 

    What:  Fun and engaging instruction and activities designed to prepare children for successful entry into Kindergarten in the fall.  Curriculum focuses on Kindergarten readiness and summer fun, with daily activities supporting social and emotional learning, explicit instruction in readiness skills, and cross-content investigations in gardening.         

    Where:  56 Broward County elementary schools.  Students will attend their current Pre-K assigned school or the site their home school feeds into.    

    When:  June 21, 2021 – July 29, 2021, Monday – Thursday, four hours daily.  Times vary by site.           

    How to Apply:  Interested families should complete the registration form on the school website where their children will be attending kindergarten.  

    Pre-K Exceptional Student Education

    Who:  Children currently enrolled in the Pre-K ESE program in Broward County Public Schools. 

    What:  Fun and engaging instruction and activities through a curriculum program that develops the whole child, inspires learning across all domains, and grows early learners into confident kindergarten-ready students.  The goals and objectives documented on each students’ IEP will be embedded within the curriculum and teachers will focus on the goals for each individual student. 

    Where:  56 Broward County Public Elementary Schools.  Students will attend their Pre-K ESE assigned school or the site their home school feeds into.

  • Grades K-5 Summer Learning Experience

    Who:  Any student currently enrolled in a traditional Broward County Public School (BCPS) in grades K-5. 

    What:  Students will participate in instruction and accompanying integration activities over the span of six weeks. Students will be immersed in standards-based content in Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies and engage in high-quality STEM and Arts/Music/Debate project-based learning experiences. Social-Emotional Learning will be integrated throughout the day.

    When:  June 21, 2021 – July 29, 2021, Monday – Thursday. Times vary by site with an 8:30 am or 9:30 am start time and runs for 4-hours.  Activities for the afternoon will be provided at select sites.   • 3rd Grade Summer Reading Academy

    Who:  Third-grade students that have not met any promotion criteria (includes charter school students).

    What:  Students will participate in high-quality integrated instruction in Literacy, Science, and Social Studies in preparation to move to fourth grade. Following six weeks of engaging standards-based instruction, students will have the opportunity for promotion to 4th grade if they pass the assessment administered during the final week of the program.

    Where:  Select sites have been chosen. See summer site list.  Students will attend the HOST site their home school feeds into.

    When:  June 21, 2021 – July 29, 2021, Monday – Thursday. Times vary by site with an 8:30 am or 9:30 am start time and runs for 4-hours.  Activities for the afternoon will be provided at select sites.   • Grades 6 - 12 Summer Learning Experience

    Who: Any student currently enrolled in a traditional Broward County Public School (BCPS) in grades 6 – 12. Students with Disabilities enrolled in the Summer Experience 6-12 will have access to the general education curriculum with the support of an ESE Teacher (Support Facilitator). All accommodations, according to a student’s IEP, will be provided.

    What: Participating students will go through a 3-class rotation and can select classes for course recovery, acceleration, and/or electives. Course recovery* is available, for most courses, through a hands-on, activity-based curriculum, and for other courses, a digital system will be used. There is also the opportunity to jump into the next school year with acceleration** sessions, designed to give students a preview of the curriculum they can expect in the fall. Add a choice of applied learning** electives, such as Art, Music, PE, Computer Science, and others elective available at each summer site, and see school in a whole new way.

    Where: Select sites have been chosen, see summer site list. Students will attend the site in the boundary in which they live.

    When: June 21 – July 29, Monday – Thursday, times vary by site either a 7:30, 8:30, or 9:30 start time and runs for 4-hours. Activities for the afternoon will be provided at select sites, please contact the host site to get a list of available afternoon programs, or use the tool above.

    *Course recovery is also available through BCPS Community Schools co-enrollment program and Broward Virtual School. Students that successfully complete the course recovery sessions will be awarded credit for the course, which can be used for grade forgiveness and graduation.     **The acceleration and elective sessions are strictly a preview of the material coming up next school year to better prepare students for those courses. Due to the seat-time requirements set by the Florida Department of Education, we are not able to award credit for these sessions. Students seeking to earn credit for courses can take Broward Virtual Courses (bved.net).

  • Extended School Year (ESY) for Students with Disabilities (SWD)

    Who: Students with Disabilities (SWD) eligible for ESY. Eligibility is an IEP committee decision and must be documented on the IEP annually.

    When: 5 weeks during the summer with an optional additional week, Monday through Thursday, June 21- July 29, 2021, for 4-hours daily. Specific start/end times vary by summer sites.

    What: SWDs will receive services based on their IEP and instruction will focus on specific IEP goals. ESY services may include academic instruction, related services, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech/language services, behavior support, transition services, and other services as highlighted by the IEP team.

    Where: Select sites have been chosen. See summer site list. Students will attend their assigned site based on their current school.

  • Reclaim & Elevate

    Who: This initiative is for select Grades 3- 5 students currently enrolled in one of the district’s targeted 33 traditional Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) who have not been identified to participate in the Summer Reading Academy – Grade 3 Retained program. These students must currently be making adequate progress or have fallen behind and need the summer learning experience to remediate their learning loss

    due to the challenges related to COVID-19 or other extenuating circumstances, i.e. remote learning experience, missed instruction, etc. 

    What: During this seven-week experience, students will participate in a blend of remote instruction for the first three weeks and then face-to-face instruction for the remaining four weeks. During the face-to-face instruction, students will participate in high-quality instruction in Literacy with an emphasis in phonics instruction, Math, Science, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), accompanied with engagement activities such as Arts/Music/Debate/Chess to address the unique needs and interest of our students. Teachers will differentiate students during the instructional block by focusing on direct and small group instruction across the content areas to address and mitigate instructional gaps.

    Where: There are 33 Reclaim and Elevate sites and students are selected on invitation-only basis based on the selection criteria. Students will attend the site their home school feeds in to.

    When: The 3-week remote instruction begins June 11, 2021 through July 1, 2021, Monday – Thursday. The 4-week face-to-face component of the program begins July 6, 2021 – July 29, 2021, Monday – Thursday. Times vary by site with either an 8:30 or 9:30 start time and runs for 4-hours. Activities for the afternoon will be provided at select sites. Please contact the host site to obtain a list of available afternoon programs, or use the tool above.

  • 21st Century/MECCA Community Learning Centers

    Real-world applications and free weekly field trips engage students in hands-on academic and personal enrichment through Reading/ELA, Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics (STEAM), character education, health & nutrition, and physical activity.  The program is available to all district public schools, charter public schools and any private school students in grades K - 12.  Breakfast, lunch, and bus transportation are provided to all participants.  21st Century Summer Programs operate Monday through Friday and run for 8 hours per day. The program is staffed for a full day and hours vary by location.  Please contact participating site for start and end times, which start as early as 8 a.m. and end as late as 5:30 p.m.
