Elementary Music

NAfME is a collaborative community that supports music educators and advocates for equitable access to music education. 

The association began with a small meeting of 104 music supervisors in Keokuk, Iowa in 1907, known at that time as the Music Supervisors’ National Conference. In 1934, the organization’s name changed to Music Educators National Conference (MENC), reflecting its growth to include music educators at all levels from prekindergarten to university, college students preparing to become music teachers, high school music honor society members, music industry representatives, music supervisors, and parents and community members who supported our cause.

In 1998, MENC expanded the organization’s name to MENC: The National Association for Music Education. Finally, on September 1, 2011, we became known simply as National Association for Music Education (NAfME).

The mission of the Florida Music Education Association is to promote quality, comprehensive music education in all Florida schools.

FMEA is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization that serves and supports the advancement of music education across Florida. FMEA promotes and publishes the Florida Music Director and music education research, organizes in-person and online professional development programs for music teachers and students, offers college scholarships for music students majoring in music education, broadens teachers’ knowledge and interest in their profession through affiliation with colleagues, and more.

How Children Benefit from Music Education in School

A series of 5 concerts, each featuring a different music component (Concert Band, Chorus, Orchestra & Jazz Band).  Each All Broward County event allows the best students from each school (Elementary, Middle, and High School) the opportunity to learn from a Guest Clinician, meet other students across Broward County, and bring their musical experience back to the music classroom. 

In the 2024-25 school year, we introduced a fifth concert to the series, which featured the All Broward Elementary Orff Ensemble. The All Broward County Honor Music events are held in conjunction with the Superintendent’s AP Studio Art Exhibition.

Music Performance Assessments allow for the student, teacher, and music program to be assessed on the Music Standards developed by the State of Florida using a rubric system that shows growth in Performance Fundamentals, Technical Accuracy & Musical Effect.  The assessments are done by solos, small ensembles & whole group ensembles. 

Elementary Music Performance Assessment will be held on April 15 & 16, 2026, at Cypress Bay High School.
