Spatial Learning Pathways

Spatial reasoning is the ability to think about and work with objects in three dimensions, often starting from a flat, two-dimensional picture. Spatial learning is the process students use to build these skills. Whether they are redesigning their own room, exploring outer space, or simulating how a living system works, these skills help students move, create, and build in both real and virtual spaces.

Thanks to partnerships with Digital Promise, Unity, Meta, NSF, and other community members, spatial learning programs, along with hardware and software, are now available in several BCPS middle and high schools.

In these programs, students experience spatial learning via intentional research-based instruction and practice in STEM-focused subject areas. Research has demonstrated that this educational application of these skills has broad reach in equitably retaining students in STEM coursework, leading to success and increased diversity in STEM careers.
