Physical Education & Health Education

In elementary school, Physical Education (PE) helps students learn basic movement skills. These include:

  • Locomotor skills like running, jumping, and skipping
  • Non-locomotor skills like balancing and stretching
  • Manipulative skills like throwing, catching, and kicking

Students practice these skills through fun activities like games, dance, gymnastics, and movement exercises. They also learn about how to move their bodies in space, how much effort to use, and how to work with others. These are called the movement framework: space, effort, and relationships.

Learning these skills helps students grow physically, think better, and work well with others. It also helps them enjoy being active and want to stay active as they grow up.

In middle and high school, PE builds on the skills learned in elementary school. Students:

  • Improve their skills and learn how to use them in sports and activities
  • Take more responsibility for their health and fitness
  • Learn the importance of teamwork and fair play
  • Get to choose from different PE classes that match their interests

These classes help students stay fit, learn new sports, and enjoy being active for life.

In Broward County Public Schools, Physical Education is part of the required curriculum. BCPS follows the PE Legislation for physical education in grades K - 12.
