Elementary Physical & Health Education

• Pursuant to Florida Statute 1003.455, all elementary students must receive 150 minutes of Physical Education per week.
• Instruction must include a minimum of 30 consecutive minutes per day.
• Physical Education is required for all students unless an approved waiver is granted in accordance with Florida law.

• We want every elementary student in the district to build strong skills, knowledge, and confidence in physical education.

• We also give elementary PE teachers chances to grow through training, teamwork, and leadership opportunities.

At the elementary level, Health Education provides students with foundational knowledge and skills that promote healthy decision-making, personal wellness, and overall well-being. Instruction is designed to introduce students to age-appropriate health concepts while helping them build awareness of how daily choices impact physical, mental, and emotional health.

Elementary Health Education emphasizes:

• Personal health, hygiene, and disease prevention
• Nutrition and healthy lifestyle habits
• Injury prevention and personal safety
• Social-emotional wellness and self-awareness
• Responsible decision-making and relationship skills

Through standards-based instruction, students begin developing the confidence, habits, and foundational understanding necessary to make positive health choices and navigate everyday life in a healthy and responsible manner. Health Education instruction aligns with Florida’s required comprehensive health education standards outlined in Section 1003.42, Florida Statutes.

The Florida Physical Education (PE) Standards can be found on a website called CPALMS. CPALMS is an online toolbox full of helpful information, trusted resources, and interactive tools for teachers. It helps teachers use the standards in their lessons. CPALMS is also the official website where the State of Florida shares its standards and course descriptions.

• We also support teachers in giving first aid and CPR lessons to all students in Grades 6, 8, 9, and 11.

SHAPE America (Society of Health and Physical Educators) is a national organization that supports over 200,000 health and physical education teachers across the United States. Its members include teachers, coaches, and other people who care about health and PE, along with groups from all 50 states.

Since it started in 1885, SHAPE America has been a leader in setting high standards for health and physical education in schools. Its National Physical Education Standards help teachers create strong PE programs. The National Health Education Standards guide schools in teaching important health skills.

These national standards help teachers give high-quality lessons that support the health and wellness of every student from pre-K through 12th grade.
