BCPS Elementary Physical Education

In elementary school, Physical Education focuses on building the foundation of physical literacy by developing students’ fundamental movement patterns, motor skills, and understanding of health-related fitness concepts. Students learn and practice locomotor, non-locomotor, and manipulative skills through engaging activities including cooperative games, dance, gymnastics, fitness challenges, sport skill development, and movement exploration. These experiences help students understand how their bodies move through space, apply effort appropriately, and interact effectively with others in dynamic environments.

Elementary Physical Education also emphasizes the development of responsible behaviors, teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal wellness habits. Students begin learning age-appropriate concepts related to fitness, nutrition, safety, and healthy decision-making while developing confidence and enjoyment in movement. By creating positive early experiences with physical activity, BCPS seeks to instill the skills, self-efficacy, and intrinsic motivation necessary for students to remain active throughout their lives.
