Coaches Code of Conduct

Coaches play a vital role in shaping student-athletes—not just in sports, but in life. Your influence extends far beyond the field, and your actions help set the tone for sportsmanship, character, and academic balance. As a leader and role model, it’s important to maintain high standards in everything you do.

 

 

Below are key expectations and best practices for all middle school coaches, aligned with guidelines from the NFCA Board of Directors:

• Prioritize Academics: Athletics should support, not interfere with, academic success. Always keep students’ academic growth at the forefront.

• Be a Positive Influence: Coaches have a powerful impact—always promote integrity, character, and good sportsmanship over a "win-at-all-costs" mindset.

• Model Respect & Ethics: Set a strong example in how you interact with athletes, officials, school staff, parents, and the community.

• Support Healthy Choices: Take an active role in discouraging drug, alcohol, and tobacco use. Refrain from using such substances around players.

• Promote School Unity: Align your athletic program with the overall goals of your school and encourage school-wide support and participation.

• Know the Rules: Understand and teach the rules of your sport. Compete fairly—never bend the rules to gain an unfair advantage.

• Encourage Sportsmanship: Help create a positive game-day environment by promoting respectful behavior among players, fans, and school groups.

• Respect Officials: Always support and respect referees and game officials. Avoid any behavior that could stir negativity or disrespect toward them.

• Lead by Example: Greet opposing coaches with respect before and after games to help set a positive tone.

• Maintain Professional Boundaries: Never pressure teachers for special treatment for athletes. Only scout opponents using league-approved methods.
