Elementary Learning

Core instructional materials are one of the most important resources educators use in the classroom to enhance student learning. It is crucial that they fully align to state standards—what students are expected to learn and be able to do at the end of each grade level—and are high-quality to ensure meaningful instructional support. The comprehensive core curriculum Broward Schools uses requires that students gain knowledge and skills systematically through reading, writing, speaking, listening, and thinking. Our core curriculum aligns with the established body of research on the Science of Reading and integrates high-impact teaching and learning practices throughout. The adopted instructional materials are part of the District's Elementary Curriculum.

At Broward County Public Schools, our math instructional materials are designed to help students truly understand math—not just memorize it. Through engaging lessons and hands-on problem-solving, students build strong thinking skills, learn how to apply what they know, and become confident in using math every day.

Our lessons follow the Florida B.E.S.T. standards and are carefully planned in three stages:

1. Exploration – where students discover new ideas,

2. Practice – where they build reliable methods, and

3. Fluency – where they become quick and accurate with their skills.

We focus on connecting math ideas from one grade to the next, so students build a solid foundation that supports their success now and in the future.

In Broward County Public Schools, students in grades K–5 use Discovery Education as their core science curriculum. This program is fully aligned with the Florida State Academic Standards for Science.

Students explore and engage with content across four key areas of science:

• Physical Science

• Life Science

• Earth and Space Science

• Nature of Science

Each unit within Discovery Education includes a Caregiver Course Overview document, available under "Course Materials" in every grade level's Techbook. This overview helps families stay informed and involved in their child's learning.

Students in Grade 5 will participate in the State Science Assessment in May. The following document provides some suggested home-based activities that you can engage in with your student that will help them be more successful in science.

In Broward Schools, students in grades K–5 engage with high-quality Social Studies materials designed to deepen their understanding of their community, country, and the world around them. These resources are aligned with Florida’s State Academic Standards, ensuring that students gain the knowledge and skills expected at each grade level. Through engaging lessons, students learn to think critically, understand history, explore geography, and become informed, civic-minded citizens. Our Social Studies curriculum also supports reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills as students explore important topics. All instructional materials are carefully selected and approved as part of the District’s Elementary Social Studies Curriculum. A Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is a seamless prevention framework that integrates all students. It is a term used to describe an evidence-based model of schooling that uses data-based problem solving to integrate standards-based instruction, interventions, and assessments to address the full range of student academic and behavioral needs present in today’s classroom. MTSS provides the structure for the District to prioritize the academic and behavioral needs of all students, including our Students with Disabilities (SWDs), students with advanced learning needs, and English Language Learners (ELL).

MTSS refers to all the instructional strategies, interventions, and other resources that are used to help all students achieve. An effective system blends culturally responsive academic, and behavior supports to create effective environments that address a range of student needs.

In Broward County Public Schools (BCPS), MTSS, Response to Instruction and Intervention (RtI), promotes a well-integrated system, where the needs of all learners are identified and supported early through increasing levels of instructional intensity and time.
