DEAF OR HARD OF HEARING SERVICES

The Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) department supports students whose hearing loss affects their participation in school and impacts academic, communication, or social development. Services are tailored to each student’s needs and delivered by specialized professionals.

Certified Teachers of the Deaf or Hard of Hearing provide direct instruction, help students build listening, speech reading, and sign language skills, and collaborate with families and school staff to ensure appropriate accommodations. Educational Audiologists assess hearing needs, manage hearing devices and assistive technology, and advocate for students’ access to communication and learning. Certified Educational Interpreters offer accurate, complete communication access using the student’s preferred communication mode.

 

  • Demonstrate a hearing loss that affects the student’s ability to participate in the educational process.
  • Demonstrate how the hearing loss affects the student’s development of academic skills, communication skills, or social skills.

Certified Teacher of the Deaf or Hard of Hearing

  • Provide specialized instruction and support to students with hearing impairments who are integrated into general education classrooms.  
  • Consult with general education teachers, and collaborate with parents and other service providers to ensure students receive appropriate accommodations, modifications, and access to the curriculum.  
  • Teach listening skills, speech reading, sign language, and advocate for the needs of their students within the school environment. 

Certified Audiologist

  • Audiologists are trained to diagnose, manage and treat hearing issues in children.  
  • Educational audiologists are members of the school multidisciplinary team who facilitate listening, learning and communication access via specialized assessments; monitor personal hearing instruments; recommend, fit and manage hearing assistance technology;  
  • Provide and recommend support services and resources; and advocate on behalf of the students. 

  • Provides comprehensive communication access to students who are deaf or hard of hearing through accurately and faithfully conveying all classroom instruction, teacher-student dialogue, and relevant auditory information using the student's primary mode of communication.

  • A general education classroom
  • A self contained classroom for students who are deaf or hard of hearing
  • A combination of general education classroom and a self contained classroom
  • Educational interpreter services can be offered in after school extracurricular activities as needed

  • Auditory/Oral Instruction – teaches students to develop hearing and speaking skills to develop spoken language for communication and learning
  • Total Communication – teaches students to develop hearing, speaking, communication skills using sign language for communication and learning
