Parentally Placed Private School Student

What is Private School Services 

Under the Title II, Part A program, local educational agencies (LEAs) are required to provide educational services and other benefits for private school children, teachers and other educational personnel, equitable in comparison to services and other benefits for public school children, teachers and other educational personnel, pursuant to section 8501(a)(3)(A) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA). Private schools must hold non-profit status in order to be eligible to receive funds. 

Students who are parentally placed in not-for-profit private schools and have an existing ESE eligibility are able to receive ESE services. The services provided include:

  • Academic instruction for grades K-12 for up to one hour based on the individual student need and supporting data, per subject area in reading and/or mathematics weekly.
  • Consultation services to private school teachers by a certified Broward County Public School teacher.
  • Speech and/or language services for grades PK-12 for up to one hour per week based on individual student need and supporting data, provided in the private school during regular school hours or at a Broward County Public School site after school hours.
  • Occupational Therapy for grades PK-12: re-evaluation, consultation, and OT as a related service for up to 30 minutes one time per week.
  • ESE Preschool students attending eligible private schools-weekly consultation and collaboration in academics, social/emotional, and independent functioning skills.
  • Private School Service Plan (PSSP): written document that outlines the special education and related services in accordance with meaningful consultation that a public school district will provide to a student with a disability who is enrolled in a non-profit private school.
  • Reevaluation every three (3) years: A re-evaluation is conducted to assess the student's ongoing eligibility for ESE services.
