Payment for advanced degrees will be provided if the degree is held in the area of certification shown on the Florida certificate.  Please view a listing of the Certification Acceptable Majors.  Also acceptable are degrees in Education such as Curriculum and Instruction, Teaching, or Education, etc. 

NOTE: If you are an existing contracted teacher with the district and are seeking information and/or the form to request an incentive for additional coursework/in-service completed after your last conferred degree, please follow this link to the correct web page.

Advanced Degrees (in-field)

Effective July 1, 2011, as provided in Florida Statutes, teachers that are new to the District or teachers that are rehired after a break in service may receive pay for advanced degrees provided the degree is held in their area of certification. You are paid for the highest degree earned.

To request payment for an advanced degree, please submit the Request for Advanced Degree Payment form along with an official transcript showing the degree conferral to Talent Acquisition & Operations - Instructional.  Instructions are provided on the form.

• Master's Degree = $3,650
• Specialist Degree = $6,800
• Doctorate Degree = $8,000

Broward County Public Schools has a fully integrated ON-LINE application system. All candidates (previous and new) must complete the new online application to be considered for an instructional position. If you have previously applied you are required to reapply and resubmit (upload) all required documents.

Required Documents

OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS

• Transcripts conferring a bachelor's degree(s), or higher, earned and credits completed in order to obtain Florida certification. Your degree must be from an accredited university.
• If you obtained your degree outside the United States, you must have your degree evaluated for United States degree equivalency by an approved foreign credential evaluation agency. For additional information regarding foreign credential evaluation access the Florida Department of Education.

EMPLOYMENT REFERENCES

• References must be from a principal/supervisor who can assess your ability as an educator or attest to your work ethic or character. After your application is reviewed, additional references may be requested. References can be completed on the Instructional Staffing Reference Form or on company letterhead.
• Experienced Teacher:
  A reference from each of your principals is required. 
• Recent Education Graduate: A reference from your cooperating/directing teacher and college/clinical supervisor is required.
  • No Teaching Experience:
    References should be from your current and all previous supervisors. A character reference is required if there is no work history. 

VALID FLORIDA EDUCATOR'S CERTIFICATE OR STATEMENT OF ELIGIBILITY

• Teacher candidates who do not currently hold a valid Florida Educator's certificate should apply for a Florida Educator's Certificate.  View a video on how to apply.
• Speech/Language Pathologists, Audiologists, School Social Workers, and Family Counselors must submit a copy of current Florida license.

Please have the following information available before you begin the on-line application:

• Dates of college attendance and degree conferred.
• Transcripts confirming a bachelor’s degree or higher with a graduation date.*
• Former employers’/principals’ names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and dates of employment.
• College supervisor and directing teacher names and phone numbers, if applicable.
• References from all previous principals/supervisors*
• Alien number, if applicable.
• Valid state certificate, state license, passing FTCE score report and/or Florida Statement of Eligibility, if applicable.
• Current Resume*
• DD Form 214-if claiming Veteran’s Preference*
  Applicants can upload up to a 2MB file (types: doc, txt, jpg, pdf, and other common formats – these are listed on the prompt for the supplemental materials page).  When scanning a document, we suggest you scan the file at 100 DPI in black and white – this will drastically reduce the file size.  Additionally, Microsoft Word has the ability to compress images (you will need to search how to do this, since it is specific to each version).

• Instructional Requirements

  1. Hold a Florida Educator’s Certificate or:
     • Complete an approved teacher education program or
     • Meeting eligibility requirements for a Florida Educator's Certificate (Bachelor's Degree)
  2. Be a citizen of the United States or hold a valid Authorization for Employment
  3. Pass a security background check.

  4. Veteran's Preference
     • All instructional and non-instructional applicants claiming Veteran's Preference must submit and attach their DD 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) to their electronic application. This process enables each school/department with a job vacancy to identify and grant the appropriate preference. Applicants with academic training and degrees granted outside the United States MUST submit a credential evaluation report that includes a statement of degree equivalency and a breakdown of the coursework and semester hour credits. Any academic training, diploma, or degree granted from Puerto Rico must be translated to English. An accredited two or four year college or university in the U.S., or a credential evaluation agency can provide this report. View a list of approved agencies.

All materials submitted become the property of the Talent Acquisition & Operations Department, will not be returned to the applicant, and are subject to the Florida Sunshine Statutes.

A variety of supplementary pay positions such as department chairpersons, athletic coaching, textbook coordinators, and club sponsors are available. They range from $300 - $10,000.

Receiving Credit for Teaching and/or Work Experience

New hires and rehires employed by The School Board of Broward County are eligible to receive credit on the Instructional Salary Schedule for teaching experience and/or directly-related work experience. The experience must be verified and approved prior to receiving credit. It is the responsibility of each employee to have the experience verified upon initial and subsequent employment. Review the sections below to verify acceptable experience. The employer verification form will be given to you during your processing appointment.

In order to receive credit, the appropriate verification form must be received and approved by the District no later than four (4) months from the beginning date of employment in any school year to be effective during that school year.
