Baker Act

Broward County Public Schools helps schools with Baker Act situations on campus.

An Involuntary Examination happens when a student or person:

• May have a mental illness and refuses or can’t decide if they need help, and

• Without care, might harm themselves or neglect themselves, and no family, friends, or services can help, or

• Is likely to hurt themselves or others soon, shown by recent actions.

This law is from Florida Statute 394.463.

It’s important for schools to know this when working with students. If schools want more training or have questions, they can call 754-321-3421 for help.
