Metal Detector Program

The purpose of the metal detector program is to enhance school safety by installing walk-through metal detectors at all high school entry points across the District. This initiative, which began at two high schools over the summer, aims to provide an additional layer of security, ensuring a safer learning environment for students and staff. The metal detectors will be placed at the entry locations of each participating school.

No, students will not need to remove backpacks, cell phones, keys, metal on clothing, and other common belongings as these items will not cause an alert.

Items such as laptops, umbrellas, musical instruments, hard eyeglass cases, and aluminum baseball bats will set off an alert. These items must be placed on tables next to the metal detectors before entering and will be collected after screening.

If a student sets off a screening alert, they will be guided to a secondary screening station to be rescreened by security personnel before entering the school.

Yes, special accommodations will be available for students with disabilities. Parents and guardians should contact the school’s administration for details.

Any student found in possession of a weapon or other banned items will be subject to disciplinary actions according to the Code Book for Student Conduct.

Staff will be present at the metal detectors to assist students with the screening process.
