FLDOE New Standards Overview

Florida’s new academic standards, known as the Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.) Standards, establish clear, rigorous expectations for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level, with a strong focus on foundational knowledge, literacy, and civic understanding. Adopted by the Florida Department of Education, the standards are designed to be concise, transparent, and aligned to prepare students for college, career, and responsible citizenship.

FLDOE Every Student Succeeds Act

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was signed into law in December 2015, amending the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 and replacing No Child Left Behind provisions. With a strong, proven accountability system, Florida is already ahead of most of the nation as it relates to the requirements laid out in ESSA. Student performance has consistently improved since Florida introduced rigorous accountability measures.

FLDOE Accountability

Florida’s accountability system, led by the Florida Department of Education, annually evaluates schools and districts using a set of student performance measures to provide clear, public ratings—most visibly through A–F school and district grades. The system is designed to promote transparency, drive continuous improvement, and ensure schools are held responsible for student achievement, learning gains, and readiness outcomes such as graduation and acceleration.
