Middle Grades Mathematics

The mathematics classrooms in Broward County are dynamic, powerful, and enriching environments where students participate in active learning. Our mathematics curriculum, programs, and practices are designed to meet individual learning styles, foster the use of multiple approaches to solve problems, and show different ways of thinking while promoting equity and access for all students. Students in Broward County mathematics classrooms are encouraged to talk about math, explore and describe observations, explain methods, and ask questions. It is our mission to help students build more flexible and efficient ways to solve increasingly complex problems, become problem solvers, and to become college, career, and life ready.

Middle School Mathematics in Broward County Public Schools is designed to spark curiosity, deepen understanding, and build confidence. With a strong focus on reasoning, collaboration, and real-world connections, students in Grades 6–8 engage in meaningful math experiences that prepare them for high school and beyond. Whether exploring ratios, expressions, geometry, or data, our courses promote active thinking and multiple problem-solving strategies to support every learner’s growth.

KHAN ACADEMY

Khan Academy is a non-profit educational organization that provides a set of online tools that help educate students. Their website have short lessons in the form of YouTube videos and includes supplementary practice exercises and materials for students.

FloridaStudents.org

Floridastudents.org provide student tutorials through standards aligned videos with content based questions and reflective opportunities. This program provides review, remediation and enrichment processes.

Grade Level Expectations

Below is an overview of students' expectations in mathematics for each grade level. The more children learn when they are young, the better they become as adults. We want to teach your children the academic skills they will need to prepare them for their next level of learning. Healthy, successful children can excel in many areas – in the classroom, on the court, and in their relationships with peers and adults.

Grade 6 Mathematics

In Grade 6 Mathematics, instructional time will emphasize five areas:

Performing all four operations with integers, positive decimals and positive fractions with procedural fluency;
Exploring and applying concepts of ratios, rates and percent to solve problems;
Creating, interpreting and using expressions and equations;
Extending geometric reasoning to plotting points on the coordinate plane, area and volume of geometric figures and
Extending understanding of statistical thinking.

Curricular content for all subjects must integrate critical-thinking, problem-solving, and workforce-literacy skills; communication, reading, and writing skills; mathematics skills; collaboration skills; contextual and applied-learning skills; technology-literacy skills; information and media-literacy skills; and civic-engagement skills.

Grade 6 Accelerated Mathematics

In Grade 6 Accelerated Mathematics, instructional time will emphasize five areas:

Performing all four operations with rational numbers with procedural fluency;
Exploring and applying concepts of ratios, rates, percent and proportions to solve problems;
Creating, interpreting and using expressions, equations and inequalities;
Extending geometric reasoning to plotting points on the coordinate plane, area and volume of geometric figures and
Extending understanding of statistical thinking to represent and compare categorical and numerical data.

Recognizing that fractions, decimals and percentages are different representations of rational numbers and performing all four operations with rational numbers with procedural fluency;
Creating equivalent expressions and solving equations and inequalities;
Developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships in two variables;
Extending analysis of two- and three-dimensional figures to include circles and cylinders and
Representing and comparing categorical and numerical data and developing understanding of probability.

Grade 7 Accelerated Mathematics

In Grade 7 Accelerated Mathematics, instructional time will emphasize six areas:

Representing numbers in scientific notation and extending the set of numbers to the system of real numbers, which includes irrational numbers; (2) generating equivalent numeric and algebraic expressions including using the Laws of Exponents;
Creating and reasoning about linear relationships including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation;
Solving linear equations, inequalities and systems of linear equations;
Developing an understanding of the concept of a function and
Analyzing two-dimensional figures, particularly triangles, using distance, angle and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.

Building functions, identifying their key features and representing them in various ways and
Representing and interpreting categorical and numerical data with one and two variables.

Geometry Honors

In Geometry Honors, instructional time will emphasize five areas:

Proving and applying relationships and theorems involving two-dimensional figures using Euclidean geometry and coordinate geometry;
Establishing congruence and similarity using criteria from Euclidean geometry and using rigid transformations;
Extending knowledge of geometric measurement to two-dimensional figures and three-dimensional figures;
Creating and applying equations of circles in the coordinate plane and
Developing an understanding of right triangle trigonometry.
