In our middle and high schools, the Secondary Mathematics program is designed to help every student build a strong foundation in math and the confidence to apply it in real life. Middle Grades Mathematics

In Broward County, our math classrooms are vibrant, engaging spaces where students actively participate in learning. We use a curriculum that supports all types of learners, offering multiple ways to approach problems and ensuring every child has access to success.

Grade 6 Mathematics

In 6th grade math, your child will build important skills that prepare them for higher-level math and real-world problem-solving.

Throughout the year, students will explore five important areas in math that will help them build strong skills and prepare for future learning:

Mastering Operations – Students will become fluent in adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and integers.
Understanding Ratios and Percents – They will learn to use ratios, rates, and percentages to solve everyday problems.
Using Expressions and Equations – Students will begin working with algebraic expressions and simple equations to represent and solve problems.

Limits and Continuity – Students will develop a deep understanding of limits, a fundamental concept in calculus, and how they relate to the continuity of functions, a critical stepping stone for derivative and integral work.
Derivatives and Their Applications – Students will learn how to find and interpret derivatives and apply them to real-world situations such as motion, slopes of curves, rate of change, and optimization problems (e.g., maximizing area or minimizing cost).
Analyzing Functions Using Calculus – They will apply their understanding of limits and derivatives to graph and analyze functions, identifying key features like maxima, minima, and points of inflection.
Integrals and Their Applications – Students will evaluate integrals and use them to calculate area under curves, volumes of solids, average values, and to solve simple differential equations.

In addition to advanced math content, students will strengthen important life and academic skills, including critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and technology use. These skills are vital for success in college and beyond.

Discrete Mathematics Honors

Discrete Mathematics Honors is an advanced math course that explores mathematical reasoning, logic, and structures used in decision-making, computer science, and other real-world applications. It is ideal for students interested in technology, logic, or non-traditional math pathways and helps build critical thinking skills in unique and engaging ways.

Throughout the school year, students will explore six key areas:

Sequences, Patterns, and Tessellations – Students will extend their understanding of mathematical patterns, including special sequences like the Fibonacci sequence, and explore geometric designs such as tessellations found in nature and art.
Probability and Combinatorics – They will apply concepts from probability and combinatorics to count outcomes, calculate odds, and solve real-life problems involving decision-making and statistics.
Linear Programming – Students will use systems of equations and inequalities to solve optimization problems, learning how math is used to make the best decisions under constraints.
Graph Theory – They will study Graph Theory, a branch of mathematics that models relationships and networks (used in fields like computer science, logistics, and social media analysis).
Election and Set Theory – Students will explore Election Theory (how different voting methods work) and Set Theory (how to organize and analyze groups of objects), applying these ideas to both mathematical and civic contexts.
Logic and Proof – Students will build reasoning skills by studying propositional logic, evaluating arguments, and learning methods of mathematical proof, which are foundational in advanced math and computer science.
