EMF Program

Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) offers an exciting mathematics opportunity for exceptional students in grades 6–8 through the Elements of Mathematics Foundations (EMF) program. For the current school year, BCPS is also extending this opportunity to interested 5th-grade students enrolled in a traditional, non-charter BCPS public school.

EMF is a fully online, self-paced curriculum designed for highly motivated and mathematically gifted students who can work independently without the need for direct teacher instruction. While many students may enjoy the challenge of advanced math, EMF is best suited for those who can thrive in a digital learning environment and are ready to engage with complex mathematical concepts on their own.

Qualifying BCPS students may take EMF as their full-time mathematics curriculum during middle school. Students who successfully complete EMF through 8th grade can earn high school credits in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, and Precalculus. These students are well prepared for AP™ Calculus in 9th grade and may qualify for dual-enrollment mathematics courses through the University of Florida.

The EMF program is rigorous and fast-paced, but it is also designed to be an exciting and enriching experience for advanced learners who enjoy deep mathematical thinking.

Because of its advanced content and self-paced, fully digital format, EMF is best suited for a specific group of students who demonstrate the following characteristics:

• High verbal and analytical reasoning abilities

• Strong intuitive understanding of mathematical concepts

• Solid executive functioning skills

• Independence and self-motivation

• Willingness to invest time and effort in solving complex problems

To be considered for admission into the EMF program starting in sixth grade, your child must successfully complete the first three EMF courses prior to the start of the school year. Specifically, students must earn a minimum grade of 90% in both Operational Systems and The Integers, and at least 85% in Sets, Subsets, and Set Operations. The deadline to complete these courses is July 27, 2025.

Each course module typically requires 15–30 hours to complete. In addition to keeping your child academically engaged over the summer, this experience provides an opportunity for both you and your child to determine if the EMF program is the right fit.

Please note that success in EMF requires a high level of intellectual maturity and self-discipline. Students are expected to take responsibility for their own learning and to persist through challenging content independently. We encourage families to thoughtfully consider whether this accelerated, self-paced program aligns with their child’s learning style and readiness.
