Secondary Social Studies

Students enrolled in secondary Social Studies courses engage with high-level content and critical thinking skills aligned with the Florida State Academic Standards and B.E.S.T. Standards for Social Studies. Through a variety of required and elective courses, students explore key concepts in American History, World History, Geography, Economics, Financial Literacy, Civics, and Government, building a strong foundation for informed citizenship and real-world understanding.

Our advice also covers important topics for navigating life after high school.

Floridastudents.org provide student tutorials through standards aligned videos with content based questions and reflective opportunities. This program provides review, remediation and enrichment processes.

Middle Grades Social Studies

Students in Secondary Social Studies courses have the opportunity to engage in learning high-level content and skills as required by the State of Florida Academic Standards and B.E.S.T standards for Social Studies. Students learn concepts and content in the areas of World History, Civics, and American History through a variety of required and elective courses.

Grade Level Course Expectations

Below is an overview of students' expectations in social studies for each grade level.

Grade 6

Sixth-grade students will engage in learning about the world's earliest civilizations through the ancient and classical civilizations of Africa, Asia, and Europe.

Throughout the year, your child will:

be exposed to the multiple dynamics of world history including economics, geography, politics, and religion/philosophy.
study methods of historical inquiry and primary and secondary historical documents.
critically examine the philosophies of early thinkers and apply these concepts to various regions of the world.
analyze historical events of the past to help gauge an understanding of how conflicts may affect modern-day challenges.

Grade 7

Seventh-grade students will engage with the principles, functions, and organization of government; the origins of the American political system; the roles, rights, responsibilities of United States citizens; and methods of active participation in our political system.

Throughout the year, your child will:

interpret and create representations of historical events and concepts using mathematical tables, charts, and graphs.
learn content and strategies to prepare for the end of course exam.
analyze real-world current events.
practice listening, reading, and speaking on political topics of interest.
Create arguments backed with evidence in order to coherently discuss political issues of the day.

Grade 8

Eighth-grade students will engage with the study of American history from the Exploration and Colonization Period to the Reconstruction Period following the Civil War. Students will clearly see the relationship between cause and effect in historical events and have the opportunity to explore those fundamental ideas and events which occurred after Reconstruction.

Throughout the year, your child will:

be exposed to the historical, geographic, political, economic, and sociological events which influenced the development of the United States and the resulting impact on world history.
interpret and create representations of historical events using mathematical tables, charts, and graphs.
Analyze primary source documents of the founding years and learn how they affected the creation of the government of the United States.
